English courses in the Philippines: one-to-one study explained

How the timetable works

A typical full-time programme combines one-to-one lessons focused on speaking and personal weak points with small group classes for listening and discussion. Schools differ in how many individual lessons are included each day and whether evening self-study is compulsory. Ask for a sample timetable for the course you are considering.

Understanding the package price

Many schools quote a four-week price that includes tuition, a dormitory room and meals. The room type, from single to multi-bed, changes the total considerably. On arrival, students commonly pay additional local fees, which can include a Special Study Permit, visa extension fees for longer stays, an ID card, textbooks, electricity and a refundable deposit. Ask for the full list of local fees in writing.

Study permits and visas

Foreign nationals studying at a language school in the Philippines generally need a Special Study Permit issued by the Bureau of Immigration, which schools usually process. Students staying beyond the initial visa-free or visa period need extensions. Rules depend on nationality, so confirm them with the school and official Philippine government sources before travelling.

Comparing schools

Compare at least two schools using the same course, number of one-to-one lessons and room type.
