Comparison decision guide

How to compare course duration and weekly intensity

Duration and intensity answer different questions. A longer course can have fewer weekly hours, while a shorter course may demand much more time each day.

Updated 15 August 2026 · Independent guidance
01Convert lessons into hours

Multiply the number of lessons by the stated lesson length. Keep contact time separate from breaks, activities and independent study.

02Compare total contact time

Weekly hours alone can mislead. Multiply comparable weekly contact time by the number of teaching weeks, then check for holidays.

03Understand level scope

Ask whether the published duration covers a module, half-level, full CEFR level or complete programme. Starting level changes the path.

04Check attendance and assessment

Progression may depend on minimum attendance, assignments or a final assessment. Confirm these conditions before assuming an end level.

05Plan a sustainable pace

Include commuting, homework, work and recovery. The most intensive option is not automatically the most effective for every learner.
