Intensity decision guide

Intensive versus part-time language courses

The word intensive is not standardised across providers. Compare actual contact hours, course length and the time available for review outside class.

01Measure weekly contact

Compare teaching hours and lesson length rather than the course label. Twenty 45-minute lessons and twenty clock hours are not equivalent.

02Allow for independent study

A faster timetable can require substantial review, homework and recovery time. Ask how much independent work is expected each week.

03Match the schedule to your life

Intensive study can suit a short dedicated period. Part-time study may be more sustainable alongside employment, family or university commitments.

04Compare progress checkpoints

Ask how placement, attendance, assessment and movement between levels work. More hours do not guarantee a particular outcome.

05Review total commitment

Compare total tuition, travel and living costs alongside the realistic number of weeks needed for your goal.
